Chile’s long struggle for independents can be personified by the length of its olas (waves) . In short or long Chile is the place to be for long lefts. The Quarto Amigos embarked on there epic “Culturally insensitive tour of South America” in mid September 2005. The prospect of missing out on a six month sojourn throughout the epic west coast of South America was to much for as enthusiastic and talented Emerson Ringrose (AKA: The Unit or as he is known in the night clubs of South America - Eminim). Once aware of Tomas Burton (AKA captain Smegg) and the Scanlon Brothers Sean (AKA: the ambassador) and Mark (AKA Chilean Pie) plan to journey through some of Latin Americas most prized jewels, Eminim stoped at nothing to part of the exploration. Like all the great discovery’s of the bygone area, Eminim stepped up to the plate, selling house and all possessions to become the tribal elder of the group.

Arriving in mid September Eminim meet with Smeg in the majestic city of Santiago, the Chilean capital. There the Senors embarked on setting the tone for the trip - search and destroy, and that they did. Upon arrival via Tahiti, Chilean Pie and the Ambassador sampled the fine work of Smeg and Eminim - straight to the hub of Chilean nightlife - Santiago. Although only a Monday night, the amigos made there best effort to make it a Saturday and showed the Chileans what it meant to be culturally insensitive. With Chilean Pie found in the gutter by Eminim and the Ambassador the tone for the trip was set.

Before the infamous Santiago vortex trap could settle in the amigos decided that the best way to restore sanity and decrease froth levels would be to head south to the tourist mecca of Chile - Pichilemu. Upon arrival the amigos were greeted with ruler edged, perfect 400 meter left hand waves breaking between 1.5 - 2 meters. After finding habitation in Residential Jamaica the boys hit it for the dusk surf and were overwhelmed by the length of the wave and fact that you get ‘jelly legs’ after each wave. The next few days included highlights in and out of the surf including Eminim and The Ambassadors trips to Discothèque 127 (which does not start until 2am) and Smeg and Chilean Pies undercover Sunday mission to the most overpriced bar in Pichilemu (a 16 pisco effort - plus cervasers is epic by anyone’s measure). Lets just say to see Chilean pie to fondle inappropriately with a Perro (dog) is not a good site in anyone’s mind.

Fed up with Papa from Residential Jamaica and his soldier like fanaticism of keeping his Casa (house) spotless and his ability to creep up on you with stealth ability, the amigos sought refuge where they could really experiment with cultural insensitivity. After a day of searching the amigos landed themselves a residence overlooking the world class Pichilemu and arranged with some locals a coastal trip to some secret spots down the coast. The amigos settled there debts with Residential Jamaica and were on there way up the point. Madrea (mother caretaker) was somewhat sad to see the amigos leave, but Papa with his invoice book in hand seamed pleased to collect the amigos money and see the back of them, or so we thought. Upon leaving in a taxi, Papa continued his army inspired stealth stake-out of the amigos. As the amigos drove down one street, there was Papa following in the street parallel. Amigos turn right, Papa waits, edges out and follows from a safe 200 metres. It was decided to see what Papa’s game was so the amigos pulled over. Papa stoped in his tracks - middle of the road and staked it out like a USA cop show - but without the doughnuts. The amigos moved on, a bit quicker and quickly skirted to the left, up a hill to the new residence and pulled in off the road. Was that the end of Papa…….. Uh no. Papa had not seen the brazen detour of the amigos, but with his brazen blocky skills (which I am sure would have fitted in well on the streets of Launceston) grided out where the amigos had found new refuge and position in front of the grinding left.
